Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, on Monday morning issued a campus alert after a report came in of a person with a gun. The university said the report of a gunman was later “confirmed,” and the campus was essentially placed on lockdown.
The university said on Twitter urged students to “please stay indoors.”
On a website update, it added that “New Haven Police have received an anonymous call from a phone booth in the 300 block of Columbus Avenue (between Howard Avenue and Hallock Street) reporting a person on the Yale Campus with a gun.”
Later, the New Haven Independent reported that a student called police, saying his roommate wanted to shoot up the campus. Witnesses then saw a person with a long-barrel gun on campus.
However, it stressed that it is “not a test.”
“Yale and New Haven Police are in the area. If you have information, please call 911 immediately. The Yale Police Department advises those on campus to remain in their current location until there is additional information,” it reads.
The Yale Daily News reported that the SWAT team was deployed to the campus.
Students who spoke with the Daily News said they have not noticed anything unusual on campus other than the alerts of a gunman.
The paper said that several PA announcements were made across the campus about the reports of a gunman, urging students to take shelter indoors.
According to Yale Alumni Magazine, most students at Yale are not on campus due to the week-long Thanksgiving holiday. Most graduate schools also do not have classes.
