Manhattan Beach, Calif.—A total of 68 men’s and 60 women’s teams vied for the championship title of the 57th Manhattan Beach Open July 14-17. Sixth-seeded Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar upset top-seeded Lane Carico and Summer Ross 21-16, 19-21, 19-17, while top-seeded Jake Gibb and Casey Patterson overcame a first-set loss to defeat third-seeded Tri Bourne and John Hyden 17-21, 21-18, 16-14.
Winning teams from both the men’s and women’s divisions took home $20,000, and the total purse for the tournament was $200,000.
From the women’s division, it was clear that a local would win the finals. Carico is a native from Manhattan Beach and attended Mira Costa High School, and Day, on the contending team, attended West High School in Torrance. Both had enthusiastic supporters.
Although Day and Hochevar failed to qualify for the Olympic Games next month in Brazil, this eighth and final tournament for the 2017 AVP tour ended on a positive note with a win at the iconic Manhattan Beach Open.
