An elderly World War II veteran from Hampden, Maine, got a pleasant surprise at local grocery store.
A woman who was standing at the check-out line decided to pay for the 89-year-old Fred Mayhew’s groceries. He was wearing his veteran cap that day, reported the Bangor Daily News.
Mayhew, who is known around town as the “Fudge Man” for his delivery of homemade fudge to the local fire department, told the paper he “was standing there and I had two $20s in my hand to pay for my groceries when the girl behind me said, ‘Put that back in your pocket. I’m gonna pay for that.’”
“She told me, ‘Lots of luck’ and ‘Thank you for being a veteran,’” he said. “I’ve never seen her before in my life,” said Mayhew. “I said, ‘What’s going on here?’”
