In an emotional moment, President Barack Obama embraced and shook hands with Hiroshima survivors on May 27 during his historic visit to the Japanese city.

Obama is the first sitting president to visit Hiroshima after the atomic bombing on Aug. 6, 1945.

“Death fell from the sky and the world was changed,” Obama said, after laying a wreath, and briefly closing his eyes and bowing his head to honor the victims at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.

“A flash of light and a wall of fire destroyed a city and demonstrated that mankind possessed the means to destroy itself,” said Obama during his speech.
