More than 5 million workers in the United States filed unemployment claims during the week ending April 11, raising the seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate to a record high of 8.2 percent, Labor Department figures show.
The data released April 16 (pdf) shows that the number of people filing initial jobless claims for the week ending April 11 was 5,245,000, while the unemployment rate surged by 3.1 percent from the previous week’s rate.
