Preliminary reports on Wednesday night show that riot police fired tear gas and smoke grenades at crowds at the University of Massachusetts Amherst after the Boston Red Sox victory in the World Series.
There were also riot police and tear gas at the University of New Hampshire, students said.
Students said on Twitter that there was unrest after the victory on campus, where a large group of students had gathered to watch the game on a big-screen television outside.
Some students said that smoke bombs were detonated at UMass.
Maria Uminski, one of the students present and who works for the Daily Collegianas a photographer, said that “The crowd continues to make its way down the southwest concourse as the police in riot gear on horses and on foot move towards them.”
“Smoke bombs are out,” she added soon after.
“Just got some tear gas in my throat,” another student said on Twitter.
Another student said that he was threatened with arrest by a riot officer.
Paul Weiskel, a photographer in Boston, was also tweeting photos of the scene, including a close-up of a tear gas grenades that he said police were throwing at students.
“Lots of smoke everywhere,” he said.
Police called it an “unlawful assembly,” according to Weiskel. That was after students were told to walk with hands up so cops wouldn’t shoot at them.
As of about 12:45 p.m., most students had reportedly dispersed.
