ANKARA, Turkey—Turkey’s sudden willingness to bomb ISIS extremists in Syria while pounding Kurdish rebels in Iraq are signs Turkey may have joined the fight against ISIS so it doesn’t lose clout with the U.S. even though it complicates Washington’s war against the extremists.

For months, Ankara had been reluctant to join the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS despite gains made by the extremist group on Turkey’s doorstep.

Now, Turkish warplanes are directly targeting ISIS locations — the latest bombing run coming early Saturday for a second straight day. Turkey then opened a second front on Kurdish rebel sites.
