The Constitutional Democratic Rally (RCD) party of ousted Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was put out of operation on Sunday by the interim unity government. The party’s offices will remain closed until the Justice Department has ruled whether or not the RCD will be banned.

On Sunday, state television and ministry sources said the measures were needed to ensure state security.

The allegation against the party include blaming Ben Ali supporters of staging violence to create chaos in the country so that the party could take back power after the president fled the country.

The 24-year ruler, Ben Ali, was ousted in January after weeks of mass street protests. The interim government is preparing for elections.

Over the last few days, BBC has reported numerous deadly clashes. Protests are now turning against the police who are accused of killing and mistreating protesters. In El Kef two people died in a clash with police, and in Sidi Bouzid two died inside a police station that was set on fire.
