A tropical depression off of Mexico has been upgraded to a tropical storm named Fernand as of Sunday afternoon.

The depression “strengthened” into the tropical storm, reported the National Weather Service.

Data coming from an Air Force reserve reconnaissance aircraft alerted the National Hurricane Center to the change.

Maximum winds in the depression had increased to at least 45 miles per hour.

A tropical storm warning had been issued by the Mexican government for the Gulf Coast of the country, from Veracruz to Tampico.

Fernand is pronounced FAIR-NAHN.
