Many fans of Douglas Adams will be toting around towels to honor his signature story, ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.’ In the classic science fiction book, the main hitchhiker in the book Arthur Dent hitch around space with his towel as a key travel item. The towel is recommended by the Hitchhiker’s Guide, a sophisticated microcomputer with the answers to any question the galaxy has to offer, sporting the “friendly” words “Don’t Panic” on its cover.

The towel day official website has listed various activities for science fiction fans who want to hitch around full force for the special day. Towel Day observers are encouraged to take photos and make videos and post them online. Flickr and Youtube are both collecting images and videos from Douglas Adams fans with their towels that go from plain to spacey.

Among the activities and special features on the Towel Day website including a Towel Day Pub Lunch in Australia and a “Geeking Out” meeting in Canada. Adams fans in the US created a Towel Day wallpaper and banners to adorn fan computer desktops.

Towel Day started in 2001 two weeks after Adam’s death, as a tribute to his contributions to the literary community. This year will be the 10th anniversary of Towel Day.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy started out as BBC Radio show in late 1978 before being published as the first of a series of books in 1979. The story has been adapted into multiple different formats including a computer game, a play, a TV series, and a comic book.
