Thousands of people gathered in cities across Spain on Sunday morning to protest a new law that would allow women to abort without restriction into the 14th week of pregnancy.
The law, which passed the Spanish Parliament in December, is scheduled to take effect in July. Organizers estimate that 600,000 people came out to protest the enactment of the law, according to a BBC report.
In Madrid, the demonstrators blocked Sol Square, a central meeting place in the city. Spain is a predominately Catholic nation and has opposed other decisions by the government, including making divorce easier and legalizing gay marriage. In October, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in a similar protest.
