The volcano Tharsis Tholus rises 8 kilometers (almost 5 miles) above the surrounding plains on the eastern edge of the Tharsis region of the red planet.
With a caldera at its center, its base spans 155 by 125 kilometers (96 x 78 miles). It is nearly circular in shape with a battered bulbous appearance and extensive faulting in its floor.
These images were created using data from the High Resolution Stereo Camera on the European Space Agency’s Mars Express spacecraft. The data is color coded with beige representing the highest regions and purple the lowest.
