The Texas Longhorns were the first team eliminated from the 2011 Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Neb. on Monday afternoon, losing to the North Carolina Tar Heels 3–0. This marked the first time the Longhorns were eliminated after just two games since 2000.
The Longhorns could not find any offensive rhythm against Tar Heels pitcher Kent Emanuel. The freshman gave a command performance, throwing a complete game, giving up just four hit, no runs, and five strikeouts. The complete game shutout was the first at the College World Series since 1993 when LSU’s Brett Laxton did it against Wichita State.
This year the College World Series has seen many firsts, since the tournament is now being held in the new TD Ameritrade Stadium. The College World Series was held at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium since 1950, but after careful consideration, the city of Omaha built the new TD Ameritrade Stadium to help keep the event in the city.
The first game was played on Saturday when North Carolina lost to Vanderbilt 7–3. Former President George W. Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch, a called strike.
South Carolina, last year’s champion, remains in the winner’s bracket after beating Texas A&M 5–4 in their opening round game on Sunday. They will face Virginia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
The College World Series will continue through the week with the Championship series starting on Monday. The two final teams will play in a best-of three-format. All games can be seen on ESPN.
