Tax Day 2014 is on April 15, and it signals the last chance for people to file taxes without an extension.

The deadline for filing taxes regularly is midnight on April 15. This is the deadline for individual tax returns for the year 2013.

It’s also the deadline to file for estimated tax payments for the first quarter of 2014 for those that file quarterly.

In addition, it marks the final deadline to file an original tax return (Form 1040) or an amended tax return (Form 1040X) for the tax year 2010 and still claim a tax refund.

Extensions

For those looking to file an extension, here’s what you need to know.

-You may be able to file for the automatic six month extension if you’re not able to file your federal individual income tax return.

-You'll need to fill out Form 4868 (pdf).

-Be aware that filing for an extension doesn’t grant an extension of time to pay your tax liability. People should estimate using tax calculators (available at various websites online) whether they owe money to the IRS, and how much they owe, and pay what they can at the time they file for an extension.

-People who are holding off filing because they owe money should know there are payment plans available, and that failure to file by the deadline incurs a harsh penalty. “It’s a huge difference, so even if you can’t afford to pay the penalty in full, it’s really beneficial to get yourself filed or file an extension,” Jeanine Harris of H&R Block told the Herald Mail.
