Tanning salon ’too fat': A tanning salon in Ohio told a woman she was “too fat” to tan, according to reports on Monday.
Kelly McGreve bought a tanning package after a session last week but when she returned, the salon worker told her she couldn’t tan there.
“He said, ‘Sorry, but I’m not going to let you tan today because we’ve just implemented a new policy where anyone over 230 pounds can’t go in one of our beds,’ ” McGrevey told WKYC. “I was just so shocked and embarrassed and humiliated.”
She first tanned in a stand-up tanning booth but the next day, it was broken and she had to use the normal beds.
“It really upset me. It’s discrimination,” she said.
“We do have a lot of bigger people that came in here and they know that they can’t go into the laydown beds because they are so, you know, they are bigger,” a staffer said, identified as Nicole, according to the station.
When she asked for her $70 back, a salon worker said “‘no, we don’t give refunds,’” she said.
She filed a report with the owner of the salon, but she said, “He asked if I was aware of how many times he had to replace the acrylic on those beds because of heavy people?”
USA Today pointed out that tanning beds have fluorescent bulbs covered by acrylic that can crack under heavy pressure.
In Ohio, around two-thirds of adults are considered overweight or obese, according to a recent study.
A U.S. Centers for Disease Control study last year found that obesity will affect 42 percent of Americans in 2030 and 11 percent will be severely obese.
