Suspect 2011 triple murder: Slain Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev is being eyed in connection with a triple-homicide in 2011 that included a former roommate.
The murders took place around the same time as the Sept. 11 attacks anniversary, investigators told ABC News on Monday.
“We are looking at a possible connection with the suspect in the marathon atrocity and this active and open homicide in Waltham,'' Stephanie Guyotte, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex County District Attorney, told the broadcaster.
Tsarnaev died during a shootout with police on Thursday night near Boston and is described as the alleged mastermind of the marathon bombing, which left three dead and 170 injured last week.
One of the 2011 murder victims trained with Tsarnaev in boxing and mixed martial arts. Tsarnaev, a former Golden Gloves winner, was teaching the victim boxing, while the victim taught him other fighting techniques.
They were found in an apartment in Waltham, Mass., and their throats were slashed. The bodies were covered with marijuana.
The murderer left the marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash behind at the murder scene, leading authorities to question the motives of the crime.
“There was no forced entry, it was clear that the victims had let the killer in. And their throats were slashed right out of an al Qaeda training video. The drugs and money on the bodies was very strange,” the investigator told ABC.
Tsarnaev also was arrested in 2009 for domestic violence after his former girlfriend said she was “being beat up by her boyfriend.” Charges were later dropped against him.
His friends told Buzzfeed they suspect him in the triple murder.
“At the time none of would have thought it was Tam. It was just so emotional, and we thought we had someone else who had done it. Tam’s name wasn’t coming up at all,” a former associate told the website, only giving the name Ray.
