At Huazhong University of Science and Technology a doctoral student in mechanical science and a person from outside the university both jumped to their deaths from a university building on Oct. 23. One week later, a 22-year-old architecture student followed suit.
Before jumping off, the 27-year-old doctoral student, Peng Kaifeng, simply said to his sister on the phone, “I’m tired and I want a rest.”
Some students said that before the incident, he reportedly argued with his Ph.D. advisor and was thinking of changing the advisor. The University has not issued an official statement in the death.
The 22-year old architecture senior student, Cheng Zhangjie, before his suicide, has posted 4 SMS texts. The last one reads: “Leave in a hurry. Goodbye, Earth people ”.
On Oct. 25, after one of the suicides, an American professor at Huazhong University posted a message on the Internet with three “whys”: “Why there is no one to make a rescue effort in the right way? Why is there no one coming to help? Why let him die in such a way?”
