San Antonio Spurs v Los Angeles Clippers

San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobli will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a fractured fifth metacarpal in his left hand, according to a report on the team’s website. The surgery will include inserting screws and a plate into the hand.

The team did not announce how long Ginobli, who injured his hand in Monday’s contest at Minnesota, would be out.

Ginobli, 34, was leading the team in scoring this year at 17.4 points per game. The 10-year veteran has played his entire career with the Spurs, helping them to three NBA titles (‘03, ’05, and ‘07) but has been prone to injuries throughout his career. Only twice has the 6’6” guard played in more than 75 of the team’s normal 82-game schedule.

The Spurs will certainly need him come playoff time, where Ginobli has a higher career scoring average (16.5) than his career regular season output (15.3).
