Gallons of crude oil spilled into the South Platte River south of Milliken on Wednesday.
The spill came from a damaged tank and was reported by Anadarko Petroleum to the state Department of Natural Resources as required by law, reported the Denver Post.
At least 5,250 gallons of crude oil has spilled into the river, which has been flooding or threatening to flood cities and towns along its banks for the past week.
State officials have responded to the spill, which is south of Milliken, where the St. Vrain River flows into the South Platte.
“This is the first specific incident where we have a clear indication of the problem,” state natural resources spokesman Todd Hartman said.
The timing of the spill isn’t clear.
