Paramedics said that as many as 50 people have been trapped after a building collapsed in Tongaat, South Africa, AFP reported.

At least one person was killed.

The building, located in KwaZulu-Natal, is said to be a mall that was under construction.

According to eNCA, paramedics were unsure of the extent of the injuries.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha told the website that the collapse took place on Tuesday afternoon.

“We have an unconfirmed number of 50 people [trapped inside]. It is a shopping mall which was under construction,” he said, according to the Mail and Guardian.

Emergency rescue crews are on the scene.

An anonymous source said that “the back wall of the mall collapsed.”

Officials said that it appears that mostly workers were trapped under the rubble of the mall.
