Sofia Coppola was awarded the Golden Lion Prize—the highest honor for a filmmaker at the 67th annual Venice Film Festival—for directing her latest movie Somewhere.
Her latest film is about a movie star played by Stephen Dorff who gets in touch with his 11-year-old daughter after experiencing a bout of existential angst.
“From that first enchanted screening it grew and grew in our hearts, in our minds, in our affections,” said the film festival’s jury chairman Quentin Tarantino, according to an AFP report over the weekend.
Somewhere shares similar traits to her 2003 film Lost in Translation, where the protagonist feels his life is meaningless and makes subsequent changes to remedy the situation.
Coppola, 39, won an Oscar award for the 2003 film.
The second-place Silver Lion award for best director was given to Alex de la Iglesia for his black comedy A Trumpet Ballad, which takes place during the Spanish Civil War.
The special jury prize was given to Jerzy Skolimowski’s Essential Killing, which is about an Afghanistan Taliban member who is taken captive by American soldiers. Vincent Gallo stars in the film and got the best actor nod by the jury.
