Smart car tipping has been happening in San Francisco lately, with cars either left tipped over or up on the back.

The tipping began over the weekend late Sunday as smart cars in three different neighborhoods were found tipped over.

Brandon Michael was out having a cigarette about 1 a.m. Monday when he spotted about six to eight people wearing hooded sweatshirts flip over the cars, he told NBC.

“They looked like they were up to no good,” Michael said. “And sure enough, they huddled around it and lifted it up.”

The cars are much lighter than normal vehicles because of their small, compact size. They weight about 1,600 pounds.

Shelley Gallivan was babysitting her friend’s Smart car when she discovered that it was flipped on its right side.

“Whoever is doing this just has misdirected anger,” Gallivan said.

Insurance likely won’t cover what happened, said Andrew Smith, who owns one of the cars tipped over.

“Because it was rolled onto its roof, the insurance company has told us it’s likely a total loss,” he told ABC.

The tipping trend may be new in San Francisco but it’s been happening around the world since at least 2005.
