AUSTIN, Texas—Shen Yun Performing Arts brought a cultural experience for the audience at The Long Center, in Austin, during its the matinee show on Friday.
Mr. David Piper, a writer, enjoyed the stories Shen Yun presented on stage through classical Chinese dance, and described them as, “classic, human archetype stories.”
Calling the themes in the stories “universal,” Mr. Piper said he saw a traditional message in the show, one that has been updated for the times with current events.
In a collection of short pieces, New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts takes the audience through different regions of China, from the legends of Chinese culture’s creations to stories of courage in today’s China. The company aims to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture.
“I enjoyed watching it,” said Mr. Piper, who writes novels and short stories. [It] was interesting plus—sumptuous. It was visually sumptuous.”
Ms. Joelynn Barclay, park planner for the Department of Parks and Wildlife in Texas, who came to see the show with Mr. Piper, said she noticed similarities in the values of Chinese culture and her own culture throughout the show that she could relate to.
“I thought it was interesting that even though the culture is so different, there’s still the very basic human emotions of love and loss, and what you saw going on stage,” Ms. Barclay said.
She was also impressed by the hand-made costumes in the show.
“The drapery of the costumes, the silk was amazing, the use of [the fabric]. Gorgeous,” Ms. Barclay said.
Shen Yun has three companies touring the world. Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company will next perform in San Francisco Jan. 3-8.
