HOUSTON—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company made a unique and inspiring Christmas Eve celebration for families who attended the matinee at Jones Hall, Houston.
“It’s something different on Christmas Eve. My adopted daughter—she’s from China, I want her to understand from an early age her culture,” said Mary Marler, who had been a graphic designer until she became a mother.
“I thought it was very inspiring, it was very beautiful, the costumes were wonderful, the dancing was phenomenal,” she said.
Mrs. Marler added that she was particularly impressed with the theme of freedom of expression within some of the stories, and felt that was what the show was really about.
“I liked the fact that these artists were able to express their beliefs and their artistic talents, and I thought it was wonderful,” Mrs. Marler said, referring to the fact that the New York-based company’s performance was not one that could be shown in China.
The traditional Chinese values instilled in the arts like classical Chinese dance teach benevolence and justice, divine retribution, and respect for the heavens, according to the Shen Yun’s official website, and these values do not align with the campaigns of China’s Communist regime
