CHICAGO—Five ladies were treated to 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture when they saw Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company, the premier classical Chinese dance and music company, perform at the Cadillac Palace on Mother's Day, May 12.

"For Mother's Day, I decided to bring my mom and my aunts. It was very nice," said Maria Stover, about Shen Yun's matinee performance.

Today's performance is the last, this season, for the New York's Company's 2013 World Tour.

Shen Yun's mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture through dance, music, and song. The corner stone of Shen Yun is story-based dance, classical Chinese dance and traditional ethnic dance.

This was the first time seeing the New York-based Shen Yun for Ms. Stover, a spa owner, Oxygen Spa Studio, and her guests.

A full orchestra accompanies each performance with original music, and a unique sound combining traditional Western and Eastern instruments.

"I love it, the whole music was wonderful," Ms. Stover said. "Usually I go with my husband to different performances, classical music, but this was great, very, very nice, the music, the costumes, the colors. Everything so bright, so rich."

One of the other ladies, Amelia Chaidz, agreed with Ms. Stover that the performance was great. "I loved all the costumes; the music was great, and very colorful."

Anna Chaidz, Amelia's sister-in-law, concurred. "It was really wonderful, very nice."

Lydia Zuniga said it was very nice too.

"It's nice, wonderful! I like it. I've never been before, it's my first time. I liked it a lot," said another one of the ladies, Maria Zuniga. "It's wonderful for me. I never imagined something like this."

Ms. Stover was impressed that Shen Yun tours each year with a whole new program. "I am interested in coming next year," she said.
