VANCOUVER, Canada—Ezzat Fattah, a professor emeritus of criminology, attended the opening performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Thursday night.

“So beautiful,” he said of the performance, which portrays the essence of China’s 5,000-year traditional culture though music and dance.

“The music, the singing, the movements, the dancing, the costumes, it is almost like a fairytale.”

Mr. Fattah is the founder of the School of Criminology at the Simon Fraser University, and one of the early pioneers of victimology. He has authored many books and is a member of the Royal Society of Canada.

“What that really stands out is a very, very good illustration and introduction to people who are not familiar with Chinese culture and arts,” Mr. Fattah said about the performance.

New York-based Shen Yun presents a new lineup of dances, songs, and musical scores that celebrate the excellence and grandeur of classical Chinese dance and music inspired by the myths and legends from China’s long and rich history.

“I am very glad that they came to Vancouver and I hope that so many people here would come in order to be introduced,” Mr. Fattah said.

“Because once they see it, I am sure they will love it and they would always come again.”

Mr. Fatah said he enjoyed all aspects of the performance.

“So very, very nice, the way they move and the way they sing,” he said.

Shen Yun’s singers use the highly difficult technique of bel canto operatic singing while retaining the proper Chinese articulation and diction.

“The sopranos sang very nicely.”
