Giraldo of Colombia stunned No. 3 Fabio Fognini (6-0, 6-0) of Italy in his second match of the tournament after Fognini retired due to injury, after beating Igor Sijsling (6-4, 6-2) in his opening match. After Fognini he edged past Dominic Thiem of Austria (4-6, 6-4, 7-5).
Giraldo and Teymuraz Gabashvili are the only unranked players left in the tournament. The other players left had a bye to start, meaning Giraldo and Gabashvili have played an extra game to make it this far.
Kohlschreiber of Germany beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France in his opening game of the tournament (7-6, 6-2) before beating Jurgen Melzer of Austria in his other game so far (7-5, 6-3).
Whoever wins this quarterfinal will face the winner of No. 1 Rafael Nadal and No. 6 Nicolas Almagro in the semifinals.
