The 16th annual SantaCon convened in New York on Saturday, Dec. 11. Santas of legal age were seen cavorting across the city, bringing holiday spirit, bearing unusual gifts, and singing naughty carols. Others dressed in Santa-related costumes, such as Mrs. Claus, as reindeer, or as presents, according to Fox News.
SantaCon has become a worldwide phenomenon that includes 178 locations in 24 countries, according to the event’s website. Eleven meeting places for New York were listed including Brooklyn Bridge Park and the American Museum of Natural History. The participants were reminded to bring two non-perishable food items for a food drive.
The event has no commercial, political, or “sensical” affiliation states the website. The revelers were encouraged to tip their bartenders well and not get arrested, since theft, violence, or vandalism would not be good Santa-like behavior.
The first SantaCon was held in 1994 and organized by The San Francisco Cacophony Society. The idea was “to play with the archetypal image of Santa,” according to Santarchy.com, and have “a lot of fun while goofing it up.”
Other cities around the world that are hosting the event on Saturday include Paris, Sydney, and Beijing.
