Moscow said on Wednesday that communications channels between Russia and the United States has been essentially frozen.

“Almost every level of dialogue with the United States is frozen. We don’t communicate with one another, or (if we do) we do so minimally,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, according to Reuters.

Peskov didn’t elaborate on why communications are frozen. However, tensions between the U.S. and Russia have escalated in recent months amid how to deal with the conflict in Syria. Recently, U.S. politicians, namely President Barack Obama and CIA Director John Brennan, also said they believed Russia was behind the hacking of emails related to Hillary Clinton during the election.

Republican Sen. John McCain on Tuesday also said Russia’s alleged involvement in hacking elections threatens to “destroy democracy,” the Independent reported. He added that it might be tantamount to the “unraveling of the world order,” while criticizing the “absolute failure of the American leadership.”
