Roona Begum, a baby in India who was born with a skull that was a gigantic 37 inches around, is finally recovering two years after her birth, following a series of surgeries.
The latest surgery, conducted on November 29, appears to have helped her vision and overall gone well.
“Roona has been recovering well since the last surgery and has gained weight. We will decide what’s to be done next after Christmas” said Dr Sandeep Vaishya, the treating surgeon and director of neurosurgery at the Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, told the Times of India.
“She responds better to her name post the last operation and has a better line of sight,” added Roona’s mother Fatima.
An emergency surgery in May saved the young child. The picture shows the size of her head before that surgery. The skull was taken from 37 inches around to 24 inches around in a surgery in August.
“You can imagine the challenges in managing such a baby, both surgically and for the parents, also,” said Vaishya in May. “We had never faced such a situation before. There was no way we would know exactly how we are going to deal with it.”
Roona has been diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, or an abnormal build up of fluid in the cavaties surrounding the brain that causes the expansion of the head.
