Rodney King, a key figure in the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, was found dead on Sunday. He was 47.

King was found at the bottom of a swimming pool and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police say there were no signs of wrongdoing, but the investigation into his death is still under way.

Rialto police Capt. Randy De Anda told CBS Los Angeles that “it appears there was some verbal contact with the fiancé, at which time she went outside and she found him at the bottom of the pool.”

He added there was “no altercation whatsoever,” saying King “had been in the patio area of the residence and apparently she had heard him in the backyard and she went out to check on him.”

King was beaten severely by police officers in 1991, which was caught on tape. The acquittal in 1992 of four police officers involved sparked the Los Angeles riots.
