A major rock slide in Colorado has closed part of the I-70 highway. The Colorado Department of Transportation (DOT) reported that just after midnight on March 8, there was a large “rock fall incident” just west of Hanging Lake Tunnel. Another rockslide on Thanksgiving Day in 2004 was in the same general area, but rocks were from a different location on the hillside. I-70 is closed in both directions to all traffic on the road’s 116-and-133-mile marker. The Colorado DOT does not have an estimated reopening time but blasted and broke up larger boulders on Monday. The slide brought an estimated 20 boulders onto the road, ranging from 3 feet to 10 feet in diameter. The largest was estimated to be about 66 tons. The rock fall caused some holes and dips in the road, and scattered rocks over a 100-yard area. There were no reported injuries.
