There are quite a few professional photo editing applications on the market, but none are quite like DxO Optics Pro 6.
DxO Labs software specializes in automatically editing images. In nearly all other RAW photo editing applications the user must manually correct each image themselves.
If images are alike, this software can create adjustments that can be applied to all similar images, yet DxO Optics Pro is able to change the specific edits according to the settings needed for each image. In other words, it adjusts according to what is needed, rather than applying identical edits to each image.
DxO Optics Pro 6 can automatically detect and correct images from 1,500 different combinations of cameras and lenses. Aside from fixing common errors specific to each camera-lens combination, it also has a good list of its own editing features for lighting, color, and other elements.
Although it can be used as a stand-alone application, many professional users will likely use Pro 6 in addition to another editing program, since further edits may be needed even after an image undergoes a round of automated fixes. A typical image may need 10 different photo fixes to bring it to its preferred state; think of DxO Optics Pro as a place to do the first 7 of the 10 for you.
Version 6 is currently available only for the PC, while the Mac version is scheduled for release later this year.
Pro 6 manages to keep things easy for casual users while still offering all the tools needed by professionals by offering different toolsets displays, similar to Apple Aperture 3. There are three different tool palettes to choose from—one for beginners, one for novice users, and one for professionals. A user can also create their own custom palettes based on which tools they use.
