Ray Rice, the Super Bowl-winning running back for the Baltimore Ravens, was recently arrested for abusing his fiance, Janay Palmer.
Rice is accused of knocking out Palmer during an argument at the Revel Casino last week. A video surfaced showing Rice dragging his fiance out of an elevator in an Atlantic City casino.
Police said the two were in a fight with one another. They were both accused of striking one another, a police complaint says.
But Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, a big Ravens fan, said he wasn’t happy with the development.
“You know what, its ... I dont know that it has anything to do with being a fan or not being a fan,” O'Malley told TMZ.
“You always feel a tremendous amount of disappointment whenever someone finds themselves in a situation involving this sort of domestic violence ... and the public attention to it only makes that pain magnified.”
In the video, Rice appears to lift the woman out of the elevator. Her arms and legs were limp and he then props her up.
Rice’s attorney, Michael Diamondstein, told the Baltimore Sun that the footage is real but it’s not entirely true.
“The video that has been put up by TMZ shows the very end of what transpired between Ray and his fiancee,” Diamondstein said, adding that Rice will “not try this case in the media.”
He also told TMZ: “We‘ll assure the public that when this matter is fully tried and completed, you’ll have a better understanding of what happened and we ask the public to reserve making any judgment until all of the facts come out.”
The alleged attack will be reviewed by the NFL under the personal conduct policy.
Rice was originally slated to appear in court last Tuesday but that has been postponed. It’s unclear when the new date is.
Police charged both Palmer and Rice with simple assault.
Palmer’s attorney, Robert Gamburg, said that he’s positive that neither person committed a crime.
