NEW YORK—Lower Manhattan is a step closer to opening a new public middle school at 75 Morton St, after the New York City School Construction Authority and the State of New York signed a $40 million purchase agreement on July 26.

The seven-story 177,000 square foot property includes an auditorium and elevators, and it is expected to house a maximum of 900 students.

“We are taking much needed steps to reducing overcrowding and bring much needed educational capacity to the Village,” Council Speaker Christine Quinn said in a press release.

The New York City Department of Education is starting site selection—the public review process that is required before opening a new city facility.
