Point Break: The 1991 movie will be remade for sure, said Alcon Entertainment, while announcing that Ericson Core will direct the new movie.

Core has credits as cinematographer for 15 movies, including the original Fast and the Furious, and Invincible. He was also the director for Invincible, which starred Mark Wahlberg as a bartender who ended up playing for the Philadelphia Eagles, but hasn’t directed any other big films.

In the original “Point Break,” Keanu Reeves played an undercover cop hunting a bunch of bank robbers that are camouflaged with masks of former U.S. presidents. Reeves falls in with a group of surfers who dabble in an array of extreme sports, led by Patrick Swayze, but their close friendship takes a turn for the worse near the end of the movie.

A reviewer on the movie database on IMDB calls the original “Point Break,” “a ground-breaking film of the early nineties.”

“Point Break,” is not only a well-done example of modern action entertainment without computer-generated special effects but also a very philosophical and spiritual study of society in the nineties,” Mike writes.

Gary Busey stars in the original film, too.

The re-make will be set in a world of international extreme sports, and have an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring, confirms Alcon, according to IndieWire. Kurt Wimmer (‘Total Recall,’ among others) wrote the script, “so adjust expectation accordingly,” the site says.

Shooting will begin on the new “Point Break,” at the end of the year, and should be on the big screens sometime in 2014.
