PlayStation is coming to your phone: Sony Ericsson unveiled over the weekend the Xperia PLAY, a gaming-centric PlayStation phone running Google’s Android OS, that features not only PlayStation games, but also PlayStation-style buttons.

The XPeria PLAY sports a 4-inch touch screen as well as controls with the iconic PlayStation button symbols of the circle, cross, square, and triangle. The phone runs a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor with 60fps graphics and also has a 5.1 megapixel camera.

The phone is the first PlayStation-certified mobile device, will have access to the PlayStation Suite, and will be able to play games from a variety of game makers, like Electronic Arts, Gameloft, PopCap, and Sony Computer Entertainment.

That means that users of the PlayStation phone—which will be available on the Verizon Wireless network in the United States—can play games such as The Sims 3 and EA SPORTS Fifa 10 in between calls.

“Xperia PLAY will forever change the way people think about smartphones and mobile gaming,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, Executive Vice President and Chief Creation Officer at Sony Ericsson, in a statement.

Other games that would be available on the Xperia PLAY PlayStation phone include the bestsellers Guitar Hero, Splinter Cell, and Assassin’s Creed.

“This spring, expect to see a lot of people with their heads down and thumbs up,” Peter Farmer, Head of Marketing for Sony Ericsson’s North America division, said in a release.

“Xperia PLAY combined with the power of the Verizon network gives you everything you need in a smartphone and the one thing you want—the ultimate gaming experience.”

Aside from gaming and calling features, the phone also can play music, access Wi-Fi, and comes with access to Android applications, such as Google Maps and Google Sync.

Weighing just 175 grams (0.39 pounds), the phone comes with an 8 GB microSD and can support memory card upgrades of up to 32 GB. The Xperia PLAY sports a 480 x 854 resolution Full Wide Video Graphics Array (FWVGA) for 3D gaming.

Available in black or white, the Xperia PLAY PlayStation phone will be available this spring, according to a Verizon Wireless press release.
