A Sony Ericsson PSP handheld gaming platform/smart phone is in the prototype phase and is due to be released in late 2010 or, more likely in 2011, according to Engadget.com.

The new PSP/phone would slide open, a la Sony’s PSP Go, but will out-perform the Go as a gaming platform, as well as offering all the features of a cellphone.

The website reports that the new device combines a Google Android 3.0-powered smart phone with Sony’s existing Playstation Portable. The unit will feature a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 chip, 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and a screen approximately four inches across diagonally.

PCWorld speculates that the device will not have a joystick-style thumb button. Instead, it will use a pressure-sensitive touchpad, along with the family pair of 4-button arrays found on the current PSP.

The screen, though small, will feature 800 x 480 resolution, much sharper than the PSP Go’s 480 x 272 resolution, according to Engadget.

The unit may also contain a 5-megapixel camera, though Engadget was not certain this feature would make it to market.
