PORT JERVIS—While Stephen Crane was not in the title, this year’s “Art & History in the Park” in Port Jervis’ Orange Square was every bit as focused on history.

Notable figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Betsy Ross strolled the square, and several New York regiments, such as the 1st, 5th and 26th were there to give a taste of civilian and military life during the Civil War. Artists set up booths in the square and at Drew United Methodist Church across the street in a show called “Spring Awakening.”

This year built on last year’s “Stephen Crane’s ‘The Red Badge of Courage’: A Living Memorial,” a similar event named after once local author Stephen Crane who wrote the Civil War-era novel “The Red Badge of Courage.” It is believed he interviewed Civil War soldiers for his book in that park, which also has a civil war monument in it.
