Phil Collins, former drummer and vocalist for the English rock group Genesis, has decided to end his rock and roll career, and not for the reasons being bandied around in various media reports.
Numerous reports cited several reasons for the 60-year-old’s retirement, such as health problems and isolation from his fans and the music industry, based on comments Collins has mentioned in past interviews.
“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again; I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids,” Collins said, according to The Telegraph.
“My doctors tell me it’s a work in progress that it’ll take about a year for me to recover. They’re not strong enough to play the drums. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that again.”
“I don’t really belong to that world, and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely,” he was reported saying on this month’s FMH magazine.
However, following these reports, Collins published a statement on his website as to the real reason: “I am stopping so I can be a full time father to my two young sons on a daily basis.”
Collins explained that the press reports were a mystery to him and had painted a picture that is “more than a little distorted,” adding, “I haven’t spoken to anybody in the press for a few months.”
“Some of the things mentioned above have been said by me in various interviews, but said as asides with a smile on my face and in passing,” Collins wrote. “They were not meant to be ‘headlines,’ they were small parts of a conversation. This clearly doesn’t come over in print and I should know better.”
Collins began his professional music career as a drummer with Flaming Youth, then with Genesis. He also has a solo career and has had many top singles in the United States and United Kingdom. They include the No. 1 hits “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “One More Night,” and “Another Day in Paradise.” He has sold more than 150 million records worldwide.
