More than 1,000 people in New York and New Jersey have been affected by mumps as of last August. Health authorities in the area said that the affected persons were adolescent Orthodox Jews.

Almost all the 494 people affected in Orange County, N.Y. are Orthodox of Hasidic Jews with a median age of 14. In Rockland County, 317 children aged 14 to 18 got the virus. Since October, Brooklyn has had 79 cases. According to the Center for Disease Control, the mumps outbreak started at an Orthodox Jewish summer camp for boys in Sullivan County, New York. The boy who triggered the outbreak is 11 years old and recently came back from the United Kingdom. Around 4,000 people were infected with the virus in the United Kingdom.

Symptoms of the virus consist of the swelling of the salivary glands around the jaw line and in the ears, as well as fever, headaches, tiredness, and other symptoms. The virus used to be very common among children, but now less than 1,000 cases are reported each year in the United States, according MedlinePlus.gov.
