President Obama previously said that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump won’t win in November, but in a recent interview, he changed his tune.
“Anything’s possible,” Obama told NBC’s “Today” on Wednesday. “It is the nature of democracy that until those votes are cast and the American people have their say, we don’t know.”
The “Today” reporter asked Obama if he is “worried” about a possible Trump presidency.
“You know, as somebody who has now been in elected office at various levels for about 20 years, I’ve seen all kinds of crazy stuff happen,” Obama said. “I think anybody who goes into campaigns not running scared can end up losing.”
Obama’s comments contrast what he said in February, when he strongly denied that Trump could be president.
“I continue to believe Mr. Trump will not be president,” Obama said at the U.S.-Association of Southeast Asian Nations at the time, according to the Los Angeles Times. “And the reason is because I have a lot of faith in the American people. And I think they recognize that being president is a serious job.”
Aggregation website RealClearPolitics show that as of Tuesday, Trump has a lead in a number of polls over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
