New York City officials are seeking funds from the federal government to reimburse $35 million to cover the security needed to protect President-elect Donald Trump between Nov. 8 and Jan. 20.
CBS NY reported that it costs around $500,000 per day.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, in a letter also signed by New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, said the New York Police Department is working around the clock to protect the president-elect.
“However the expense associated with protecting him in the midst of a dense city that is home to 8.55 million residents is logistically complex and requires a significant commitment of resources,” the letter reads, CBS News reported. “Accordingly, New York City respectfully requests that the Administration assist our efforts seeking reimbursement for funds that have been expended to date and will be spent on or before the inauguration.”
He said that it’s the Obama administration’s responsibility to provide the funds for Trump’s security.
Trump currently resides in his Manhattan home, the Trump Tower, and has used the building for this transition team’s meetings. Armed guards are currently stationed there.
“Locating a residence within New York City that requires ongoing Presidential-level security presents unprecedented law enforcement concerns,” Mark-Viverito also wrote to President Obama in the letter, the New York Post reported. “It is a high-density neighborhood and street traffic easily obstructs pathways to and from the building, making it profoundly challenging for the NYPD to establish a secure perimeter.”
