The match being play in overcast and slippery conditions began with two errors in the opening 90 seconds, one for each side.

The Dragons opened the scoring under controversial circumstances when star centre Mark Gasiner scored from a pinpoint kick by five-eight Jamie Soward. This came after a side-line burst by winger Brett Morris, but replays showed his feet were over the sideline as he was throwing the ball infield. It was Gasiner’s 86th career try.

The Dragons, have not lost a match all season once they have gotten to 5 points ahead. The Rooster’s had to do what no team has done before this year and recover from 6 points down against the Dragons.

The Roosters closed the gap to 6-4 when captain Braith Anasta also scored a controversial try after 18-year-old Joseph Leilua looked to have lost the ball in the act of scoring, only for Anasta to dive on the loose ball. The ball was ruled by the video–ref to have been dislodged by a Dragons knee and not knocked on.

In the 20th minute the Roosters took the lead after a backline move saw second-rower Mitchell Aubusson score in the corner. Todd Carney missed with the conversion for the second time, to make it 8-6 to the Roosters.

In the 27th minute the Dragons Jamie Soward narrowly missed a penalty which would have tied the scores up.

Not long after Dragons prop Michael Weyman left the field after heavy contact from the Roosters Daniel Conn, who was placed on report.
