Notre Dame has agreed to leave the Big East Conference and join the Atlantic Coast Conference in all sports except football. The sides haven’t set a timetable on when the transfer will happen.

“The ACC was founded on the cornerstones of balancing academics, athletics, and integrity,” said Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner John Swofford, according to a report on the conference’s website. “Our partnership with Notre Dame only strengthens this long-standing commitment.”

As part of the agreement with the ACC, Notre Dame will play five football games annually against the other conference members and every member at least once every three years.

“This will enable us to maintain our historic independence in football, join in the ACC’s non-BCS bowl package, and provide a new and extremely competitive home for our other sports,” said Jack Swarbrick, vice president and director of athletics at Notre Dame, according to a report on the university’s website.
