Nissan Motor Co., the third-largest Japanese automaker, on Thursday issued a recall of more than 2.14 million vehicles worldwide due to a faulty ignition relay system that could cause engine problems.

The recall affects vehicles sold in Japan, United States, and Canada, according to an announcement on the company’s warranty website. In total, about a dozen models are affected. In the U.S. market, the recalled vehicles include the Nissan Cube, Armada, Frontier, Pathfinder, Xterra, Titan, and the Infiniti QX56 luxury SUV. Nearly ten models sold in Japan were affected.

The issue reportedly could cause the engine to stall, and in certain extreme cases, become unable to start, the Yokohama, Japan-based company said in a statement. No reported accidents were mentioned.

Around 835,000 of the affected vehicles were made in Japan, and 762,000 were made in the United States. The rest were assembled in Europe.

The recall is the third-largest ever by any automaker. Early this year, Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp. recalled more than 10 million vehicles in total due to issues related to gas pedals, floor mats, brake fluids, and steering wheels.
