NEW YORK— The State Labor Department released the November unemployment rates Thursday. The statistics show an overall improvement from a year ago, but unemployment rose in certain areas.
The jobless rate in Orange County was 7.6 percent in November, which is an increase compared to the 7.4 percent a year ago. Ulster County’s rate last month was 7.9 percent, up from 7.7 percent in November 2011. Sullivan County’s jobless rate in November was 9.2 percent, up from 9.0 percent in November 2011.
But overall, New York state’s private sector jobs increased by 88,000 from November 2011 to November 2012.
The state’s unemployment rate is determined by a telephone survey of 3,100 households, out of more than 7 million in New York state. However, the responses may not be a fair sampling since many people’s landlines were not working during Hurricane Sandy.
The data released is not seasonally adjusted. It is better to compare the statistics on a year-to-year basis of the same month, rather than the previous month’s data.
