NEW YORK—More than 5,000 unemployed New Yorkers will get temporary jobs through a $27 million federal grant, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday.
“This funding will not only provide young people and the unemployed with the opportunity to participate in cleaning up and rebuilding communities devastated by the storm, but it will provide valuable work experience and on-the-job training that can be useful in future careers,” said the governor in a statement.
The funding provides communities the opportunity to hire local youth and unemployed persons for continuing cleanup from Hurricane Sandy.
People interested in applying can call the Department of Labor at 1-888-469-7365, or visit www.labor.ny.gov/sandyjobs. Only unemployed people will be considered. Hired workers will get $15 an hour for work including cleaning and repairing public structures and property in nine counties declared disaster areas, which include Bronx, Queens, and New York counties.
