It seems as if just yesterday the sun’s vibrant rays were shining onto the city’s bustling sidewalks while New Yorkers avoided the sweltering heat by donning crochet halter tops, gold-studded sandals, and denim cut-off shorts, while fetching sunhats and beach gear in tow. And suddenly, with the blink of an eye, crunchy leaves have begun to appear across the pavement along with the brown leather boots, faux fur vests, and timeless knit scarves popularly favored by the fashion-forward of our city.

Of course, there remains the daily morning struggle: “Hmmm, should I really wear this lined trench coat in mid-November? I’m sure it'll be like practically sixty degrees by midday anyway…but I would freeze to death in this cashmere cardigan!” Whether or not you’re mentally prepared to trade in the bandeaus for beanies, the shifting of seasons always calls for major closet revamping!

Generally, people associate autumn with a shift towards darker, richer colors such as plum, mauve, and evergreen. However, this fall has abandoned the notion of solid hues for funky animal prints, loud orange statement pieces, as well as a resurgence of pastels from last spring. So, don’t box away those mint green flared skirts just yet! Paired with a black stocking and the perfect pair of chic black flats…and voila! You’ve managed to reinvent a staple of your springtime wardrobe without spending a dime.

Bringing back the boho chic style trend of the warmer months, this fall season is also leaning towards oversized garments rather than clean-cut silhouettes. Some may view these draped pieces as bulky and overbearing, but they offer endless warmth and comfort!

This brings us to the constantly waging war between opting for style over comfort. As the temperature drops, and hats, gloves and scarves start appearing perched atop storefront mannequins, we must begrudgingly alter our wardrobe’s dynamics to accommodate the gusty winds and chilly nights to come.

Fortunately, there are tons of ways to transition from summer to autumn without losing an ounce of style. Coats and jackets in A-line or cape-style fragments are both feminine and sophisticated while fur-lined boots, coat collars, and scarves will forever be classic elements of the fall/winter wardrobe.

While military boots and darkly shaded parkas are the classic mark of a crispy autumn day, don’t be afraid to experiment and throw in a pop of color with a pair of magenta earmuffs or some eye-catching firetruck red booties.  New York City’s autumn is all about reinvention and self-expression!

Now, with these few pointers guiding your fingertips as you sift through your wardrobe, tossing out last season’s items into donation boxes may seem as simple as the flick of a wrist...but remember, what may seem like grungy old garbs this season may very well be next year’s most sought after piece!
