Senator Calls for FDA Review of Caffeine Inhaler

Sen. Charles Schumer wrote to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Margaret Hamburg on Thursday requesting a review of a drug product named AeroShot that could lead to “serious and dangerous consequences” if used by youth.

AeroShot provides users with caffeine powder through a small plastic inhaler. Six to eight pumps provides about 100mg of powdered caffeine, the amount in a large coffee. The product is to be released in New York and Boston in January without an age restriction and has never been reviewed by the FDA. While the drug is described as “healthy” and “safe” for children over the age of 12, regulators have not verified any of the safety claims.

He is particularly concerned with the product’s use in conjunction with alcohol, as suggested by the makers European advertising campaigns. Caffeine and alcohol proved to be a troubling combination after the rising popularity of caffeinated alcoholic drinks coincided with an increased number of alcohol-related emergencies, hospitalizations, and deaths.

Community Supports Woodside Families

Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer delivered over 3,000 items to families who suffered losses from the Woodside fire that occurred on Nov. 18.

The families, local Pastor Daniel Gilland, and the Red Cross joined Bramer on Thursday at his office, where the items were distributed. The donated items include diapers, food, cleaning products, clothing, and toys.

After the fire that claimed the life of one victim and injured four others, the councilman called for a relief drive on Dec. 12 to help the families whose lives were devastated by the fire. The building at 40-38 61st St. housed 25 people and adjacent buildings also suffered damage. The community responded generously, according to Bramer.

“In the wake of this tragic event, it is heartwarming to see the community’s response to support their neighbors. The response was more than we could have ever hoped for, and I sincerely thank everyone for their tremendous efforts” said Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer.
